i grew up in a Redskin house... my grandfather had season tickets, my dad loves them and so everyone else in the family rooted for them. Having to be different (they would say a 'rebel without a clue') i didn't want to go with the obvious Dallas partly because i didn't want to get disowned but mostly because i had already fallen in love with the G-men. I remember watching the fateful Redskins/Giants game when LT ended Joe Thiesman's career... it was horrible, my little brothers (i was young back then so they were really little) were upset, my little sister (who thought Joe was right up there with God) cried and wouldn't talk to me for a week!
As far as hated teams i would have to say E-gals, especially when they had T.O. Dallas has been plucking my nerves lately - i hate the term 'America's Team'... but i digress.
Back to the beloved G-men, i love them so much that when i got married in February it was a Redskins (my husband isn't perfect, he loves the skins)/Giants wedding complete with the minister wearing a ref uniform, us wearing jerseys and tailgating afterwards! Once we were pronounced man and wife our families did the wave. (it had to be a small family only wedding because my brother was being sent back to Iraq the next week so just family but it was a lot of fun!)
The G-men heard about it and sent me an autographed football and a letter of congratulations. It was awesome!
I can't believe you hate the Capitals more than the Flyers or Rangers, WTF?
My teams are the Packers, Cubs, and Ottawa Senators- and will remain so until the end of time. The list of teams I don't like is much longer:
NFL: Bears, Vikings, Ravens, Cowboys, Redskins
MLB: Yankees, Red Sox, Angels
NHL: All 29 teams that aren't Ottawa, in particular the Leafs, Rangers, and Flyers.
The Nationals: because they're local, and I can't stand the Orioles...plus I grew up a Giants fan, and don't like them anymore after the whole Bonds era. So I like the Nationals.
That said, I'm not really a fan of major league ball. I really don't like the modern parks. They're all pretty bland and pretty much the same. I've been to the new parks in San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Baltimore (well newish now I guess), and Atlanta over the past 10 years. Pittsburgh's is, by far, the nicest. But most of the other ones--especially the one in Atlanta--are bland anti-septic stadiums with no real character.
Fans are removed from everything by the giant video boards. The grunginess of the past--I grew up going to games at Candlestick Park, paying $6 to sit in the Upper Deck behind home plate or $2.50 to sit in the left field grandstands--is gone. Everything is clean. There's this need to provide luxury, and ot re-write the past so it's glorified and better than it was. I'm a realist, so I don't buy into that.
The problem is baseball is ultimately a sport of the past. It's about going back to the ballgame and being reminded of being a seven year old kid with a glove in the stadium. It's about being reminded of going up to a player and actually getting him to say hi to you. In this era, that's all gone.
RFK had some of what I remember from being a kid. I went to two games there. It was fun and it reminded me of my youth. I haven't been to the Nationals Park. I supposed I'll drop the $10 and go sometime this year. But I'm sure I won't be reminded of my youth when I go back there. I went to Wrigley Field on a cross-country drive in 1998 after I graduated from high school; the past is still felt there. But it's one of a kind now.
If I go to a Suns game, I can feel some of that. If they move, I suppose I'll have to drive an hour to Harrisburg to watch baseball--I refuse to go to Frederick. Harry Grove stadium is the definition of anti-septic and what's wrong with modern baseball. Or maybe go watch Appalachian League ball once a year. I hear it's still pure down there.
So, in reality and despite the management, the Hagerstown Suns are probably my favorite team.
Ryan, the 1 reason i dislike the Caps more then the Flyers? the way the Caps block Pens fans from buying tickets, No other team tries half as hard as the Caps do.. i understand Home Ice, but come on.I forgot about a team i used to dislike, but can stand them now.The Cleveland Browns. No Shawn,I'm not changing my teams..lol..after they moved to Baltimore, they became my #1 hated team. But can't really hate a town after you wear yellow ribbons in the defense right?lol now, about baseball
I remember going to Pirate games back in the Three Rivers days,Sitting in Peanut Heaven,Which is the 700 level! One of the things i remember about those years, The drive down Rt 8,going to the stadium.walking up to this huge bowl. The photo days. You came out to the park before the game, and got to walk on the carpet, and have your picture taken with the player.Yes there were the really bad years,1985 ,anytime in the last 15 years. But for some reason, i come back to root for them no matter what. For some reason, the people of Hagerstown don't know how lucky they are to have a pro club in town.Yes it's single A ball,But how many towns can say they have that? One of the things i enjoy about Minor League Baseball, you have that connection to players, see the guy start out,and hope he does well on his journey towards the bigs.
MLB-Phillies,Orioles,Yankees
NFL-Ravens-By a MILE!
NHL-FLyers nose out the Rangers
NBA-Any team that Michael Jordan or Phil Jackson is associated with.
College-I HATE MICHIGAN!
Oh yeah.. i forgot about Michigan lol.. Not alot of people know i've switched college teams over the last couple years,Pitt will always be one of my favorites,I used to like Penn State,But after seeing the Penn State fans throw FULL cans of beer at Ohio State fans,I decided to start following Ohio State alittle more now
